'Black Nativity' Holiday Film Now In Theaters
FeaturesForest Whitaker, Angela Bassett, Jennifer Hudson, Tyrese Gibsonand Star-Studded Cast
(Forest Whitaker, The Belle and Angela Bassett)
By Sheilah Belle
TBR --The feel good movie of the season is getting set to hit theaters in just a few weeks.
Featuring Forest Whitaker, playing a no-nonsense reverend, who is joined by Angela Bassett, Jennifer Hudson, Tyrese Gibson, Mary J. Blige and newcomer Jacob Latimore who’s character sits at the center of the film, all do an amazing job in bringing this modern adaptation of Harlem Renaissance poet Langston Hughes' classic Off-Broadway production to the big silver screen.
Presented by Fox Searchlight Pictures, the holiday musical drama, Black Nativity, follows a Baltimore teen named Langston (Jacob Latimore) sent by his single mother, Naima (Jennifer Hudson) to New York City to spend the Christmas holiday with his estranged Grandparents, played by (Whitaker) the Reverend Cornell and (Bassett) who plays the role of his First Lady Aretha Cobbs .
Finding the Reverend's and First Lady’s lifestyle a bit bittersweet, Langston makes up his mind to try to fine a way to be with his mother again and help out with her financially strapped situation. In his efforts, Langston embarks on a few unforgettable experiences along the way and learns the true meaning of family through his journey.
Forest Whitaker said, “This is an important movie because it talks about the coming together of the family and love and forgiveness.” Whitaker also said, he “studied the scripture” to make sure he knew the story well and if he needed to improvise on stage he could.
Kasi Lemmons, who directed "Black Nativity" and wrote the screenplay, said it took five years to pull it all together before she was given the green light. However she also said “I got my dream cast of just about everyone I wanted. Forest was the trickiest in some ways because at the time when I wanted to shoot, he was in South Africa. So we waited for Forest.”
One of the producers behind this production is Bishop TD Jakes who says, “I’m excited about it because first of all it’s musical content is quite different from anything I’ve ever worked with. You have Tyrese, Mary J Blige and Jennifer Hudson and to see that type of music mixed with Angela Bassett and Forest Whitaker is phenomenal. And Forest…he gives such integrity to his character, and does one of the best jobs as an actor I have ever seen of a clergymen.”
One of the surprises in the movie is to hear a couple of the seasoned actors sing and play the piano.
Langston Hughes's play, originally titled "Wasn't It a Mighty Day?," debuted Off-Broadway in Dec. 1961. Still performed on stage today, "Black Nativity" retells the story of the birth of Jesus Christ from the Book of Luke with an all-black cast performing in song and dance.
"Black Nativity" is now in theaters.
This is truly the movie for the entire family!

Los Angles, CA -- One of the world’s most powerful businessmen and Spiritual Leaders, Bishop T.D. Jakes took some time out to talk with The Belle.
He’s the producer of the upcoming feel good movie of the season, The Black Nativity, slated to hit movie theaters on November 27th.
Featuring Forest Whitaker, playing a no-nonsense reverend, who is joined by Angela Bassett, Jennifer Hudson, Tyrese Gibson, Mary J. Blige and newcomer Jacob Latimore who’s character sits at the center of the film, this movie is about family, life, forgiveness and how people struggle to get through life.
“I’m excited about the Black Nativity, because it’s musical content is quite different from anything I’ve ever worked with. You have Tyrese, Mary J Blige and Jennifer Hudson and to see that type of music mixed with Angela Bassett and Forest Whitaker is phenomenal. And Forest…he gives such integrity to his character, and does one of the best jobs as an actor I have ever seen of a clergymen,” says Bishop T.D. Jakes.
Truly all of the actors do an amazing job in bringing this modern adaptation of Harlem Renaissance poet Langston Hughes’ classic Off-Broadway production to the big silver screen, thus creating a movie that all families will be able to relate to.
When asked about the Gospel Community and his thoughts pertaining to our societies compromising the word of God, Bishop Jakes said, “When you see a culture transform, if you look back through history, we have always had these kinds of issues, but we didn’t have Social network, Facebook, Twitter, television and technology throwing gasoline on the fire. So I don’t know where it’s going, but I’m encouraging every artist, every preacher and those out there to be creative all day long. But also be careful, that you don’t do something in a short window of opportunity, that will disgrace the body of work you have done all during your life.”
Spending time with Bishop T. D. Jakes was truly priceless as I now look to him as a Spiritual Father Figure.
Be sure to catch the Black Nativity when it hits movie theaters nationwide, November 27th.

(In Photo, The Wardlaw Brothers, The Belle and WWBT/CW Network TV News Anchor/Reporter Chris Thomas)
By Sheilah Belle
When thinking of five biological brothers that have made a huge impact on the world through music, two names automatically come to mind: The Jackson 5 and The Winans.
Now, with a unique and extraordinary blend of vocal harmony, emerge five brothers known as THE WARDLAW BROTHERS (TWB). Dubbed the “Boyz II Men of Gospel”, TWB consists of four lead singers, and one dynamic bass man. The eldest brother, Carl Anthony “Tony” has the traditional, soulful voice. Martin Luther “Lute” is the lead vocalist with a voice that speaks to the spirit. He is also the primary songwriter, musician and producer. “Jamie” Cornelius is the melodious bass man that defines TWB’s distinctive sound while Carl III “Carlo” melds in the urban/hip hop flavor. Lastly, Rodney Allen “Baby Boy”, contributes the smooth, serene voice of the five.
Exemplifying a strong music ministry and diverse artistic appeal, TWB continues to reach across cultures, age groups and ethnicities and not be confined to a particular audience. With an allegiance to God, TWB embrace the obligation to use their gifts to impact the body of Christ. With God always before them, they know there are no boundaries. The Wardlaw Brothers want to spread the Gospel and ultimately want to plant “Jesus seeds” to help somebody come to Christ.
